A $38 sale feels like $38 until the fees, the label and the box come out of it. Most makers know their materials cost but rarely see the whole order in one place, so a listing that looks healthy can quietly pay less than minimum wage once the time is counted. This calculator lays out a single order end to end so you can see what actually landed in your account and what your hour was worth.

The math is transparent: it adds the item price and the shipping you charged, takes off your combined percentage fees, then subtracts materials, packaging and the postage you really paid. What remains is net profit, which it divides by the order total for a margin and by your hands-on minutes for an hourly rate. It also solves for the item price at which this exact order would break even. It does not know your platform fee schedule, so the fee percentage is yours to set.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the item price and the shipping you charged, exactly as the buyer saw them at checkout.
  2. Add what the order consumed: materials, packaging and the postage label you actually bought.
  3. Set your combined fee percentage and the minutes you spent, then read the net profit, margin, hourly rate and break-even price.

What the math assumes

  • Percentage fees are applied to the item price plus the shipping you charge, which is how most marketplaces bill transaction and processing fees.
  • The default 9.5% fee is only a placeholder that combines a transaction fee and payment processing; replace it with your platform's current rates.
  • Fixed per-order fees such as a listing fee or a flat processing charge are not modeled separately; add them to the materials and packaging field if you want them counted.
  • Net profit is before income tax and before paying yourself; the hourly figure shows what is left for your time.
  • Sales tax collected from the buyer is excluded because it is passed through to the state, not earned.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the hourly rate look so low when the order shows a profit?

Net profit is what is left after fees, materials and postage, but it still has to pay for your time. Forty-five minutes on a $12 net is $16 an hour; ninety minutes on the same order is $8. The hourly line is the honest one.

Do I count the shipping I charged the buyer as income?

Yes. The calculator adds it to the item price because most marketplaces take their percentage of the full amount, and you then subtract the postage you actually paid. Overcharging or undercharging for shipping shows up in the net.

What does the break-even price mean?

It is the item price at which this order, with the same shipping charge, fees and costs, would net exactly zero before your time. Anything below it loses money on every sale.
